90's kid

Before we were entertained by ipads, pinterest and series, 90's kids (of which I am proudly one) explored the world in a different way.
Here is collection of my favourite memories from the 90's.

Movies

  • The Lion King  -  it changed cinema forever. Coming from the Eastern Cape, Lion King was the first movie I ever saw in a cinema - the novelty was huge. I especially liked the popcorn, so much that I had to leave the movie early. Let's just say a whole box of popcorn enjoyed by a 3year old is not a recipe for success.
  • Titanic - enough said. My heart will go on.
  • Cool Runnings - after rollerblading, bobsleighing seemed to be the coolest thing ever.
  • Matilda - for a long time I knew that if only I practiced enough I would also be able to move things around with my eyes.

Music
  • Spice Girls - we knew the words to all the songs ( I think I still do). A lot of conflict between friends was centred about which one of us would be which Spice Girl, I usually chose Sporty Spice. Except for the music, the spice girl shoes guaranteed popularity. And your room was really bare if the spice girls did not cover your walls. In short: your life was not complete if it wasn't spiced up.
  • Venga boys vs Backstreet Boys : Let's face it, it was one or the other.
  • Hanson - i think the long hair did the trick.
  • My first CD ever was "NOW 30" - what a mix of happening tunes.
  • Let's not forget Britney Spears, before the drugs and rehab, "Hit me Baby One More Time" was huge.
  • The Macarena - I'm  not much of a dancer, but when I'm old and have forgotten everything else, I will still be able to spontaneously bust out these awesome moves.

The Gear

  • No outfit was complete without a scrunchie (twice the size of your ponytail), butterfly hairclips or a bandana, rollerblades, a bellbottom,a baggy mad dogs shirt and a sweater tied around the hips. If you wanted to complete the look, a moneybelt was all that was needed. Hawaiian print anything, and denims was usually also a winner.
    • I had a scrunchie consisting of multi coloured beads - what a fashion statement.
  • Letters to friends were written with milky pens followed by glitter and metallic pens. If you had  the little booklet, with black paper sheets to use with milky pens - your status in class rose instantly.
  • The best pet you ever had was a tamagotchi.
  • The ultimate interior design element was a lava lamp. Apparently you can easily make your own lava lamp. How did I not know that?
  • How could we ever tell our mood if it wasn't for moodrings?

Living in the 90's was awesome and I'm so grateful for the exciting childhood I had.

My favourite ad ever : 90's kid by Internet Explorer. It sums it all up perfectly.

Today, Today was a good day!

And the fun began.....
